A ring wall was built on the hill for better defense. However, several fires and the great conflagration of 1518 destroyed almost all of Visp. Today, only a few houses from the Middle Ages remain.   <\/p>\n<p>To counteract the flooding, the major Rhone correction project was launched around 1900. This freed up the area for development.
